YTL to renovate Thistle Johor Bahru into JW Marriott, opening end of 2026.

KUALA LUMPUR: Marriott International has signed an agreement with YTL Hotels to bring the luxury JW Marriott brand to Johor Bahru through the strategic conversion of the former Thistle Johor Bahru hotel.

The project is expected to be completed and open to the public by December 2026, thus strengthening Marriott's presence in the luxury hospitality segment in Malaysia.

Marriott International Asia Pacific (excluding China) President Rajeev Menon said the move is part of the JW Marriott brand's strategy to expand to destinations that are showing increasing demand for business and leisure travel.

"Johor Bahru has strong cross-border connections and is growing as an international hub. This makes the city a natural location for the JW Marriott brand, which emphasizes transformative luxury experiences," he said at the signing ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.

Meanwhile, YTL Hotels Executive Director Datuk Mark Yeoh Seok Kah said the long-term partnership with Marriott International was further strengthened through the latest project.

"The hotel will be transformed into a modern luxury destination that reflects the values of JW Marriott. It also marks Johor Bahru's role as a destination of choice for high-profile tourists," he said.

The opening of JW Marriott Hotel Johor Bahru is expected to be a major catalyst for the growth of the city's luxury hospitality sector, thus elevating Johor as a premium destination that can compete with Singapore.

The state's rapid economic development, strategic location and the opening of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) next year are among the key factors supporting the presence of the five-star brand.

Meanwhile, Marriott International's Senior Vice President of Development, Asia Pacific (excluding China), D. Shawn Hill, said demand for luxury accommodation is increasing in secondary markets such as Johor Bahru, in line with the growth of tourism and easier access between the two countries.

"We are seeing significant demand growth in many of the major urban rural markets. Johor Bahru is a strategic location because it is adjacent to Singapore and the RTS will reduce travel constraints by being just five minutes from Woodlands," he said.

The JW Marriott Johor Bahru hotel, which is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation, covers an area of 1.9 hectares with 410 rooms including premium accommodation options with a contemporary concept and panoramic city views.

Other planned amenities include an Executive Lounge, a spa with five treatment rooms, hydrotherapy facilities, a modern fitness centre, a resort-style swimming pool, tennis courts, three pickleball courts and a Kids' Club for families.

The event space has also been enhanced with a total area of 2,517 square metres, comprising a 900 square metre main ballroom, a 600 square metre junior ballroom and 16 meeting rooms.

The hotel is located at the intersection of Jalan Sungai Chat and Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, just minutes from the expected completion of the RTS Bukit Chagar Station, the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex and Senai International Airport.

JW Marriott Johor Bahru will be the second JW Marriott hotel in the country after JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, thus strengthening Marriott's luxury portfolio in Malaysia which also includes The Ritz-Carlton, The St. Regis and W Hotels.

Are Johor Bahru & Johor Ready To Accept The Arrival Of "Mustafa Center"?...

Mustafa Center is a 24-hour shopping complex located on Syed Alwi Road, Singapore. This 24-hour shopping complex is often the focus of tourists because at the time this blogpost was being typed... Mustafa Center is the only shopping complex / mall operating 24 hours in the world.

As the most important cosmopolitan city in the south west coast of peninsular Malaysia... Johor Bahru have the potential to establish a Mustafa Center branch here.

The capital of Johor is Johor Bahru. Before Johor Bahru became the capital of Johor... there are several places that used to be the capital of Johor, among them are Johor Lama (Kota Tinggi District) and Teluk Belangah (Singapore).

Just as the capital Malaysia is located in Kuala Lumpur while the federal administrative center is located in Putrajaya... the state of Johor is also following the steps of the federal government to reduce urban congestion by moving part of the administration to a new urbanization area.

At the time this blogpost was being typed... the capital of Johor is still the cosmopolitan city center of Johor Bahru (Tanjung Puteri) while most of the Johor state government administration was transferred to Iskandar Puteri (Medini Iskandar).

However... moving a capital or state / territory capital to a new location is not an odd thing. There are some countries that have moved the capital / state capital / regional capital to a new location... even when this blogpost is being typed... neighboring countries such as the Republic of Indonesia are in the process of moving the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to an area within North Penajam Paser area and Kutai Kertanegara area (both of these areas are located within the province of East Kalimantan).

In Malaysia... the state of Selangor once made history when it moved the process of transferring the capital of Selangor from Kuala Lumpur to Shah Alam because around the 70s... the federal government at that time wanted to make the district of Kuala Lumpur a federal territory.

The isolation of the capital / state capital / provincial capital from the commercial city of the country / state / territory is also not an odd one like the example of the United States whose capital is Washington DC while the main commercial city of the country is the city of New York... China whose capital is Beijing while the country's main commercial city is Shanghai... India whose capital is New Delhi while the country's main commercial city is Mumbai. In Indonesia, there are provincial capitals that are not the main commercial city of a province such as the Riau Islands province whose capital is Tanjungpinang while the main commercial capital of the province is Batam.

Therefore... it is not impossible if one day in the future... the capital of Johor have the potential to be moved from the cosmopolitan city center of Johor Bahru (Tanjung Puteri) to the city of Iskandar Puteri (Medini Iskandar). If that happens (the transfer of the capital of Johor from the cosmopolitan city center of Johor Bahru / Tanjung Puteri to Iskandar Puteri / Medini Iskandar)... the cosmopolitan city center of Johor Bahru (Tanjung Puteri) can still serve as the main commercial city of the state of Johor.

Anyway... the author of this blog hopes one day in the future... this thing can become real ...

Pasir Gudang has a local authority which is the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang, MPPG) but does not have a land office and a subdistrict. Land administration in the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang, MPPG) area is administered directly by the Johor Bahru District & Land Office located in Larkin.

When it comes to the payment of door / property tax and also the payment of local authority business license in the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang, MPPG) administrative area... locals in the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang, MPPG) administrative area will go to the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang, MPPG) located in downtown Pasir Gudang to pay for door / property tax and local authority business license.

When it comes to land issues... locals in the administrative area of Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang, MPPG) will go to the Johor Bahru District & Land Office located in the Larkin area to settle land issues.

Is it time for the Pasir Gudang / East Johor Bahru area to have its own land office and subdistrict? If measured in terms of population and economic growth... Pasir Gudang have the potential to have its own land office and subdistrict which helps the smooth administration of land in Johor Bahru district by focusing on land administration in the eastern area of Johor Bahru district.

Sultan Abu Bakar College (Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar, MSAB) or better known by locals in Johor Bahru district as English College (EC) is the oldest secondary school in the state of Johor. This high school was established in 1914.

This secondary school is one of the premier schools and high school of excellence in the district of Johor Bahru.

This boarding school is located at Jalan Sungai Chat, Sri Gelam near Dataran Bandaraya, Taman Nong Chik, Thistle Hotel, Johor State RTM Broadcasting Center & Bukit Serene Palace (Sultan of Johor Palace). A few kilometers from this secondary school... located Sultanah Aminah Hospital (Hospital Sultanah Aminah, HSA).

Legoland is an international theme park operated by Merlin Entertainments. At the time this blogpost was being typed... there were 8 Legoland theme parks around the world. One of the eight Legoland theme parks is located in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, MALAYSIA.

This Legoland theme park is named as Legoland Malaysia. The theme park started operating on 15th September 2012.

Legoland Malaysia theme park is the first Legoland theme park in Asia. Apart from Lego theme-based theme parks... there are also Legoland Hotels and Lego Water Theme Parks near this Legoland Malaysia theme park.

In terms of ranking the best international theme parks in the world... Legoland theme parks ranked second after Disneyland theme parks. Legoland theme parks are also at the top of the charts compared to Universal Studios Theme Park and Six Flags Theme Park.

Johor Bahru District have several public universities in this district, among them is Malaysia Technology University (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, UTM) located in Skudai. The university is more focused on technology and engineering.

The history of the establishment of public institutions of higher education began in 1904 with the establishment of the Treacher Technical School in Weld Road, Kuala Lumpur or Weld Road is now known as Jalan Raja Chulan.

In 1942... The Treacher Technical School was upgraded to a Technical College. In 1971... The Technical College was once again upgraded to the National Institute of Technology (Instituts Teknologi Kebangsaan, ITK).

The excellence of public institutions of higher education did not stop there and in 1975... once again the public institution of higher education was upgraded with a new name, Malaysia Technology University (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, UTM) until now when this blogpost was being typed.

The rapid growth of this university makes the Gurney Road campus unable to accommodate the needs of space and other facilities. With the consent of His Majesty the late Sultan Ismail, Sultan of Johor, this university has built a new campus in Skudai which covers an area of 2400 acres. Construction work began in 1978.

The new campus worth more than one billion Malaysian ringgit was inaugurated by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Dipertuan Agong, the late Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail as the second Chancellor of UTM on 16 September 1985.

In the state of Johor... Malaysia Technology University (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, UTM) is the best public institution of higher education in the state of Johor.

In the state of Johor at the time this blogpost was being typed... the district that has more than one district education office is the Johor Bahru district which is divided into two district education offices namely Johor Bahru district education office and Pasir Gudang district education office.

Pasir Gudang District Education Office administers primary and secondary schools in the eastern area of Johor Bahru district (Plentong parish and Sungai Tiram parish which includes Pasir Gudang, Seri Alam, Masai, Ulu Tiram, Sungai Tiram, Kong Kong and areas) near the eastern area of Johor Bahru district).

Given that the Johor Bahru district is the second largest urbanization district in Malaysia after the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur... the Johor Bahru district have the potential to have even more district education offices. Among the district education offices that have the potential to be created is the Iskandar Puteri district education office which administers primary and secondary schools in the western area of Johor Bahru district (Iskandar Puteri, Bukit Indah, Gelang Patah and adjacent areas within the area of west of Johor Bahru district).

Given that the Johor Bahru district is the second largest urbanization district in Malaysia after the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur... the Johor Bahru district have the potential to have even more district education offices. While this blogpost is being typed... most local government-owned radios through the Malaysian Broadcasting Department under the Ministry of Communications & Multimedia Malaysia are only at the state level.

Unlike in our neighboring country, the Republic of Indonesia... Malaysia does not have a local public television station at the state and regional levels. Indonesia not only have public television stations at the national level but there are even public television stations in every province operated by the Republic of Indonesia Television (Televisi Republik Indonesia, TVRI) while at the district / city level there are radio stations local public operated by Republic of Indonesia Radio (Radio Republik Indonesia, RRI).

In further enhancing efforts to deliver the platform of aspirations and government policies to the people, convey local news information to the people, preserve / nurture / further develop local cultural arts... in the opinion of the authors of this blog... it is time for Radio Television Malaysia (Radio Televisyen Malaysia, RTM) one step further by creating local public television stations in each state and local public radio stations in each district, subdistrict and local authority under the operation of Radio Television Malaysia (Radio Televisyen Malaysia, RTM).

And because of that... in the opinion of the author of this blog... Johor Bahru district as a cosmopolitan district on the south west coast of peninsular Malaysia has the potential to have more than one local RTM radio station one day in the future. Among the local RTM radio stations that have the potential to be created in this cosmopolitan district is "Radio Pasir Gudang FM" which focuses on listeners of Pasir Gudang residents (citizens of the administrative area of Pasir Gudang Municipal Council / Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang, MPPG).
